Modern
Silver Proofs
Many
countries now produce proof, collector versions of
their mass produced silver bullion coins. Modern silver
proofs carry the same specifications, but undergo
a separate minting process that vastly enhances the
appearance of these coins.
"Proof" is a term with a very specific definition
to those in the coin, or numismatic, industry. Proof
coins undergo a specialized minting process that utilizes
select dies. Lustrous coin blanks are fed manually
into the presses where they are struck multiple times
to ensure softly frosted, detailed coin images raised
above a mirror-like background. Mint inspectors review
each coin before deeming it a proof and place it in
a protective plastic case.
These coins are usually available in special presentation
cases. Proof
Silver American Eagles, for example, come in satin-lined
velvet presentation cases with official U.S. Mint
Certificates of Authenticity guaranteeing their weight,
purity, and silver content.
Proof coins typically have a limited mintage and
set price determined by a multitude of factors, which
include mintage, rarity, condition, age, and the price
of the particular metal. In the case of the United
States, the government only issues a limited number
of proof coins each year and certain years have been
known to sell out quickly.
It should be noted that Proof Silver American Eagles
are the only non-bullion silver coins currently allowed
by the United States government to be utilized in
self-directed Individual
Retirement Accounts. Click
